Family Class Immigration
Spousal Sponsorship Canada
Reuniting families is at the heart of Canada’s immigration system. Shirani Daniel, RCIC-IRB, guides Edmonton residents through inland and outland spousal sponsorship applications for spouses, common-law partners, and conjugal partners.
Inland vs. Outland Sponsorship
Spousal sponsorship allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to bring their spouse or partner to Canada as a permanent resident. The two main streams—inland and outland—differ based on where your partner lives at the time of application.
Inland Sponsorship (In-Canada)
Your partner is currently in Canada with valid status (visitor, worker, or student visa). Both applications—the sponsorship and the PR application—are submitted together to IRCC.
Outland Sponsorship (Outside Canada)
Your partner lives outside Canada. The sponsorship application is processed in Canada; your partner’s PR application is processed at the IRCC visa office in their country.

Spousal Sponsorship FAQ
Processing times change regularly. Inland applications include a concurrent open work permit and can take 12–24 months for PR. Outland applications vary by country but often process in 12–18 months. Shirani monitors IRCC processing times during your application and advises on any changes.
Yes. Inland sponsorship applications include an open work permit (OWP) request. If the OWP is approved, your spouse can work for any employer in Canada while the PR application is being processed. OWP processing is often faster than the full PR decision.
A spouse is someone you are legally married to. A common-law partner has cohabited in a conjugal relationship with you for at least one continuous year. A conjugal partner is someone in a committed relationship with you for at least one year, but cohabitation has not been possible due to legal or immigration barriers. The documentation requirements differ for each category.
You have the right to appeal a spousal sponsorship refusal to the Immigration Appeal Division (IAD) of the Immigration and Refugee Board. As an RCIC-IRB, Shirani is authorized to represent clients in IAD appeals. Refusals should be reviewed carefully before deciding whether to appeal or reapply.
