AAIP Streams Explained
Alberta runs several distinct immigration streams under AAIP. Eligibility requirements, documentation, and processing timelines vary significantly between streams.
Alberta Express Entry Stream
For candidates in the federal Express Entry pool with a strong connection to Alberta. A nomination adds 600 CRS points. No job offer required for some categories.
Alberta Opportunity Stream
For temporary foreign workers currently employed in Alberta in an eligible occupation. Does not require an Express Entry profile.
Rural Renewal Stream
Supports smaller rural and francophone Alberta communities. Requires a community designation and a qualifying job offer in that community.
Tourism and Hospitality Stream
For workers in specific tourism and hospitality NOC codes employed in Alberta. Targets frontline service and culinary workers.
The AAIP Application Process
Eligibility Assessment
Shirani reviews your work history, NOC/TEER code, language scores, and ties to Alberta to confirm which AAIP stream applies and whether you meet thresholds.
AAIP Application Preparation
All required documentation is identified, reviewed, and assembled according to AAIP requirements. Errors in this stage cause processing delays or refusals.
AAIP Nomination Issued
If approved, Alberta issues a Provincial Nomination Certificate (PNC). You then apply to IRCC for Permanent Resident status using the nomination.
AAIP FAQ
It depends on the stream. The Alberta Opportunity Stream requires an existing Alberta job offer and current employment in the province. The Alberta Express Entry Stream does not require a job offer for most categories, though having one strengthens the application. Rural streams require a job offer with a designated community employer.
Processing times vary by stream and application volume. The Alberta Express Entry Stream can move faster because of the federal Express Entry connection, but Alberta provincial processing alone can take several months before the nomination is issued. IRCC processing for PR after nomination typically targets six months for Express Entry-linked files.
The AAIP nomination is issued to the principal applicant. When you apply for Permanent Residence after receiving the nomination, you include your spouse and dependent children in the federal PR application. They become permanent residents at the same time as you.
